Multiplying and Dividing Positive and Negative Numbers

In this video, we explore the rules for multiplying and dividing numbers using algebra tiles, patterns, and family of facts. Three word problem examples are given.

The rules for for both multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers are the same:

If the two numbers have the same sign, then the solution is positive

Ex.   $7 * 9 = 63$   $63 \div 7 = 9$
$ {^-7} * {^-9} = 63$ $^-63 \div ^-9 = 7$

If the two numbers have different signs, then the solution is negative

Ex.   $7 * {^-9} = {^-63}$   $63 \div {^-7} = {^-9}$
$ {^-7} * 9 = {^-63}$ ${^-63} \div 9 = {^-7}$
