Let’s Talk about Numbers

Do you ever get confused about the difference between integers and real numbers? How about rational and irrational numbers? In this video we take a look at how the different types of numbers are related.

 

The Different Types of Numbers

Natural Numbers

Natural Numbers:  also called counting numbers,
starts at $1$ and continues from there.
    Ex. $1, 2, 3, 4, 5 …$

whole numbers Whole Numbers: include all the natural numbers and zero.
Ex. $0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5 …
interges Integers: include all the whole numbers and their opposites.
Ex. $… -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…$

rational numbersRational Numbers:  include any number that can be written as a fraction.  This includes all the integer, and both terming both repeating and terminating decimals.
 Ex. $(-2, -1.5, -1, 0, 0.25, 1, 1\tfrac{7}{8}, 2.\overline{\rm 3})$

irrational numbersIrrational Numbers: are non-repeating decimals. (Numbers that can’t be written as a fraction.)
Ex. 
$ \sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3}, \Pi , \varphi $

Real numbersReal Numbers: Include both rational and irrational numbers.

 

imaginary numbers Imaginary Numbers:  A number when squared gives you a negative answer. It is called imaginary number because there is no real number that when you square it becomes negative. i represent the  $ \sqrt{-1}$.
